Notre Dame College President Serves up Ethnic Treat to Students on Paczki Tuesday

As people around the Christian world prepare for Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the holy season of Lent, Notre Dame College students will be served Paczki by their president on Tuesday, February 13, also known as Paczki Day and Fat Tuesday.

What is significant about the presidential paczki is that it will be baked from College President Thomas G. Kruczek’s family recipe, handed down from his mother and served on campus by the president from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the campus dining hall.

“We have done this every eve of Ash Wednesday since I came to Notre Dame in 2014, and it is a lot of fun. I come from a proud Polish family, and this gives me a chance to share my culture with our students in a special way that also recognizes my late mother, Kruczek said.

"We have students here from 40 states and 20 countries, and for many of them, this is the first chance they have to learn about this tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages,” the president continued.

Paczki is a Polish delight similar to donuts. The filled, deep-fried dough balls are covered with powdered sugar. Traditional fillings include rosehip and poppy seed, but most bakers today also feature fillings such as chocolate cream, peanut butter and pina colada.

The original goal of making paczki was to use up all of the sugar, butter and eggs in the house before Lenten fasting began on Ash Wednesday.
